A Beautiful Death....A Tribute To Kodi Wright
By Marcy Wright
It was a beautiful transition, partly because of the Valium that Kris gave me, but mostly because Dr. Angel Mitchell's wonderful manner. Before Angel arrived Kodi ate a good dinner and we all had a last romp in the field in front of the house. Kodi had his favorite red ball and tried to chase Zorro for the Frisbee. Then he was tired and rested in the grass watching while the rest of us played. We helped him back inside to his bed by the front door...WITH the red ball! He was happy, loving being loved. Once Angel was there Jack sat on the floor next to Kodi's bed and Kodi rested his head on Jack's leg. Jack gently rubbed his head - for a long time. I sat there, too, talking to him and thanking him for the gift of his presence in our lives. He loved the gentle tones and touches. He was at peace. And, although immensely sad, so were we. Angel was able to administer the sedative and euthanasia meds through a hind leg vein. Kodi couldn't feel it as he had virtually lost feeling and use of his hind end. He first went to sleep and shortly later was gone. It couldn't have been more serene and dignified. Angel was surprised at how little it took to still Kodi's heart. She said he must have been ready. On a strange note, Zorro and Piper were nearby but seemingly not aware of the significance of what was going on. Looker, on the other hand, came and sat right at Kodi's head and spent several minutes intently watching as Kodi made the transition. Angel said she had never seen anything like it.
It will take some time to realize and accept the major change in our lives and routine.
Kodi was a wonderful dog. His spirit will play with the red ball in our hearts for the rest of our lives.
